Sales representative

Sales representative resume example

One page. Reverse chronological, no columns, no photo. Quota attainment by year is the whole resume: a sales rep who does not publish their numbers is assumed to be hiding them, and that assumption is usually right.

The top of a sales representative resume: contact details, a two-line summary, and the first role with two quantified achievements.

The bullets and skills are this page's own. The name, employer and dates are invented.

An applicant tracking system usually reads your resume as plain text before a person does. This page covers what that text should hold for sales representative roles: the words postings use, bullets with real numbers in them, and a layout a parser can read. Every example here is invented, written to show how specific a strong sales representative resume gets.

Must-have skills for a sales representative resume

These skills come up often in sales representative job postings, and recruiters search their ATS for them. Include every one you genuinely have, in the words the posting uses.

New business development
Pipeline management
Prospecting and cold outreach
Discovery calls
Solution selling
Negotiation and closing
Account management
Territory planning
Forecasting accuracy
Salesforce
Outreach and sequencing
Contract negotiation
Upsell and cross-sell
Channel partnerships
Customer retention
CRM hygiene

Pro tip: mirror the job description exactly

If the job description says "React.js" and you write "React", a recruiter searching for the exact term may not find you. Use the posting's phrasing and acronyms in your skills section and bullet points, where they are true of you.

Strong sales representative resume bullet examples

Every bullet below follows the same formula: strong action verb + what you did + quantified impact. Study the structure, then replace the numbers with your real achievements. Generic bullets like "responsible for X" tell a recruiter nothing about what you achieved.

Action

Start with Built, Reduced, Migrated, Designed, Optimized, Led.

Tools

Name the exact tool or method: New business development, Pipeline management, Prospecting and cold outreach, Discovery calls.

Impact

End with a number: time saved, cost, volume, quality, or people served.

Sales Representative - Quota attainment

01

Achieved 128%, 141% and 112% of quota in three consecutive years against a rising target that reached $1.4M, finishing 2 of 3 years in the top 5 of a 40-person team.

Sales Representative - New business

02

Opened 31 new logos in an underworked territory, growing it from $380K to $1.1M in annual recurring revenue over two years.

Sales Representative - Deal size

03

Raised average contract value from $18K to $34K by moving discovery upstream to operations leaders rather than end users, with no reduction in win rate.

Sales Representative - Forecast discipline

04

Held forecast accuracy within 8% for six consecutive quarters, which is why leadership used my pipeline as the reference for board reporting.

Common mistake: weak action verbs

Avoid passive openers like "Responsible for", "Helped with", or "Worked on". These tell the recruiter nothing about your actual contribution. Replace them with ownership verbs: Built, Designed, Led, Reduced, Launched, Architected, Negotiated, Delivered. Then always end with a number.

The bullets above, in a finished resume

Rendered by the same exporter the builder uses, in an ATS-safe single-column template. No tables and no side columns, because that is what the format advice further down this page tells you to avoid.

Sales representative resume writing guide

Three areas where most sales representative resumes either win or lose against the competition. Read each section carefully, even one improvement here can meaningfully increase your response rate.

Publish the numbers, including the target

Quota attainment by year, with the quota figure itself, is the core of a US sales resume. "Exceeded quota consistently" is what a rep writes when the numbers are unremarkable, and every sales hiring manager reads it that way.

Give the target as well as the percentage. 130% of $400K and 130% of $3M are different achievements, and only the absolute number distinguishes them. Ranking within the team adds a second dimension a percentage cannot.

Say what kind of selling it was

Transactional inbound, outbound enterprise, channel, renewals and field sales are close to separate professions. Name the motion, the average deal size, the sales cycle length and whether you were hunting or farming.

Hiring managers screen hard on this fit, because a rep who closes $8K deals in two weeks and one who runs nine-month enterprise cycles rarely swap successfully. Being explicit saves you interviews you would not have wanted.

Sections, in order

Contact, summary, experience with quota attainment in each role, skills, education, awards. President's Club and similar recognition is worth its own line, since it is externally verifiable and hiring managers look for it.

Leave out: a photo, your date of birth, marital status and your full street address. City and state only, plus territory coverage and travel willingness.

How to use these numbers

They are national and cross-industry, so your city and sector move them a long way. Use the median as the anchor, name a specific number rather than a range, and justify it with the single most quantified achievement on your resume.

Sales representative resume format and structure

Standard section names in a familiar order are easiest for an ATS to parse and for a recruiter to skim. Use this structure:

Section 01

Contact information

Name, professional email, phone, LinkedIn URL, and city/country. No photo, no date of birth, no full address. Keep it to 2 lines maximum.

Section 02

Professional summary

2-3 sentences. Years of experience as a sales representative, your primary specialty, and your single biggest quantified achievement. No fluff.

Section 03

Work experience

Reverse-chronological order. Company name, your title, dates (month/year), location. 3–5 bullet points per role, each with a number. Most recent role gets the most bullets.

Section 04

Skills

List New business development, Pipeline management, Prospecting and cold outreach, Discovery calls, Solution selling, and other relevant tools. Group by category if you have 10+ skills.

Section 05

Education

Degree, institution, graduation year. No GPA unless above 3.5 and within 3 years of graduation. Certifications go here or in a separate Certifications section.

Section 06

Optional sections

Projects (essential for early-career), Certifications, Publications, Open Source, or Languages. Only include if genuinely adding signal.
