Common mistake: weak action verbs
Avoid passive openers like "Responsible for", "Helped with", or "Worked on". These tell the recruiter nothing about your actual contribution. Replace them with ownership verbs: Built, Designed, Led, Reduced, Launched, Architected, Negotiated, Delivered. Then always end with a number.

Civil engineer resume writing guide
Three areas where most civil engineer resumes either win or lose against the competition. Read each section carefully, even one improvement here can meaningfully increase your response rate.
Licensure goes in the header
If you hold a PE, put it after your name and name the states: Marcus Reyes, PE (TX, OK). State licensure is a hiring constraint, not a nice-to-have, and a firm bidding work in a state you are licensed in will read that line first. If you have passed the FE and are accruing hours, say so with the year: "EIT, FE passed 2023, PE eligible 2027." That is a concrete timeline rather than a vague claim, and it tells a hiring manager exactly when you become billable at a different rate.
Project value, scope and your actual role
Civil resumes live or die on the project list. For each one give the type, the dollar value, the size, and what you personally did. "Worked on a highway project" is unreadable; "$14M, 2.3-mile municipal roadway reconstruction, engineer of record" is a credential. Be careful to distinguish designer, project engineer and engineer of record. In this field those are legally meaningful roles and overstating one is the kind of error that ends a process late and badly.
Sections, in order
Contact, summary, licensure and certifications, experience, project list, skills, education. Licensure sits high because it is a filter. A separate project list works well once you have more than five projects worth naming. Leave out: a photo, your date of birth, marital status and your full street address. City and state only.

They are national and cross-industry, so your city and sector move them a long way. Use the median as the anchor, name a specific number rather than a range, and justify it with the single most quantified achievement on your resume.

2-3 sentences. Years of experience as a civil engineer, your primary specialty, and your single biggest quantified achievement. No fluff.
